A Smarter Approach to
College Recruitment
Most players don’t fall short because of talent.
They fall short because they don’t understand what coaches evaluate.
A College Coach’s Perspective
Born and raised in London, Gavin came to the U.S. as an international student and NCAA Division II men’s soccer player. A four-year starter, he was part of one of the most successful periods in program history, winning two conference championships and earning an NCAA national tournament appearance. He later completed his CPA and MBA, graduating debt free.
Over the past 12 years, Gavin has coached at the college level, winning a conference championship and finishing two games shy of becoming the institution's all-time winningest men's soccer coach in program history. During this period, Gavin worked closely with student-athletes while also being directly involved in the recruiting and evaluation process. This experience provided a clear understanding of how recruitment decisions are actually made and what often gets overlooked along the way.
From a coach’s perspective, most players aren’t overlooked because of a lack of talent. More often, it comes down to how they are perceived in key moments including: decision-making, situational awareness, communication, and how they handle pressure. These traits are developed through leadership and maturity, which coaches consistently evaluate, but they’re rarely explained or developed in a structured way.
That gap is what the EDGE system is designed to address.
Rather than focusing only on exposure, outreach, and placement, the approach is built around developing the player, guiding the process, and helping families make more informed decisions, all within one aligned system.
WHERE COLLEGE RECRUITMENT
BECOMES MORE THAN PLACEMENT
The recruiting process can feel straightforward on the surface, but in reality
there are several layers that influence how opportunities are created.
Understanding how these pieces fit together can make the difference between
simply going through the process and approaching it with purpose.
The Talent Gap
Many players competing at strong clubs have the ability to play at high levels of college soccer, yet don’t receive the types of opportunities they expected. During college recruitment, talent alone is not what determines outcomes. What matters more are characteristics and traits that translate throughout the game, and how they are perceived by college coaches.
It’s also common to see families rely on promotion, advocacy, or the idea of guaranteed placement, but those approaches don’t change how a player is actually evaluated. Without a clear understanding of what coaches are looking for, it’s easy to invest time and money without seeing the outcomes you expect.
The Coach's Lens
From a coach’s perspective, evaluation goes well beyond technical ability. During the recruiting process, decisions are rarely based on isolated moments. What matters more is how a player reads the game, responds under pressure, and impacts the team consistently, and how those traits show up when it matters most.
These are the details that tend to separate players as the level increases, yet they are not always clearly defined or intentionally developed. Without understanding how coaches view performance, it becomes difficult to align development with what is actually being evaluated.
The Inside Edge
The recruiting process can feel straightforward on the surface, but there are multiple layers that influence how opportunities are created. Without a clear perspective, it’s easy to focus on the visible parts of the process while missing what is actually driving decisions behind the scenes.
With the right guidance, families are able to approach the process with more clarity and direction. This allows players to focus on what truly matters, rather than relying on assumptions or inconsistent feedback along the way.
The Edge Approach
A more effective approach to recruiting requires both development and direction. Focusing on only one part of the process can create gaps, even when the effort and investment are there. Bringing these elements together allows for a more aligned and intentional pathway.
Global Edge is built around that idea, combining player development, process guidance, and decision support into one system. This ensures that each step is connected, purposeful, and focused on long-term outcomes rather than short-term exposure.
